Showtime Developing Comedy Series Adaptation Of Comic 'Chew'

Showtime has bought a script for Chew, a quirky half-hour cop show based on John Layman and Rob Guillory’s bestselling comic book of the same name. Stephen Hopkins is attached to direct and executive produce the project, which hails from Circle of Confusion, the company behind AMC’s hit series adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead.
Terri Hughes Burton and Ron Milbauer (Eureka) wrote the Chew script, which will now be tweaked under Showtime's guidance. Chew tells the darkly comic story of federal agent Tony Chu, a “cibopath” able to get psychic impression from the things he eats who is assigned to the most usual and bizarre crimes. “There are a lot of superhero comic books, but there are not many food comic books," Layman told me back in July when the TV project was still in the nascent stages. Along with Hopkins, Burton, Milbauer, David Engel and Circle of Confusion are also executive producing Chew, with Hopkins' producing partner Kate Garwood expected to produce in some capacity. Hopkins has a longstanding relationship with Showtime: He directed the pilot for the network's dark comedy series Californication and recently helmed an episode of freshman drama Shameless as well as one of Showtime's recently ordered pilots, the Don Cheadle starrer House of Lies.

In addition to The Walking Dead, which has been renewed for a second season, Circle of Confusion is executive producing Powers, a drama project based on the comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Oeming that was recently picked up to pilot by FX. Charles H. Eglee adapted the comic book for Sony TV and FX Prods., with Michael Dinner directing.

Amy Winehouse Dead at 27

Numerous sources are reporting that Amy Winehouse was found dead in her North London home today. Emergency services responded to a call at 3:54 PM but once officers arrived, they found her unresponsive. A statement released by the Metropolitan police further explained the event, and said "Police were called by the London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05 hours today, Saturday 23rd July following reports of a woman found deceased." At this point in time, police are treating her death as "unexplained."

In May, Winehouse checked into a treatment center and her spokesman, Chris Goodman, said the reason behind seeking help from professionals was because Winehouse wanted to be completely ready for her upcoming tour in Europe this summer. However, she only stayed at the clinic for one week, and Goodman clarified that she would continue working towards getting healthy with the facility's help as an outpatient.  Shortly after that came the news that Winehouse canceled her entire European tour after she attempted to perform in Belgrade under the influence and was booed off the stage after she had trouble singing the words to her song, Just Friends. Of the tour cancellation, Goodman said, "Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances. Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen."

DreamWorks Buys J. Michael Straczynski's Script About Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle

DreamWorks has purchased the original screenplay Voices From the Dead from Changeling writer J. Michael Straczynski. The thriller delves into the real-life relationship between magician Harry Houdini and Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle
Houdini and Doyle, who was a leading Spiritualist at the time, met in 1920 and became friends for a while despite long-running arguments about the existence of the supernatural. Doyle included a chapter in his book The Edge of the Unknown that claimed that Houdini had psychic powers, while Houdini often used his acts to debunk fraudulent claims about the spirit world.

Straczynski's script creates a fictional account of the two teaming up with a psychic to solve a set of murders in 1920's New York.

The CAA-repped Straczynski also co-wrote the 2009 action thriller Ninja Assassin, and he has screenplays in development at Disney (Shattered Union), Warner Bros. (Forbidden Planet) and Marvel (Silver Surfer). In TV, he was a writer-producer for Babylon 5, Jeremiah and Murder, She Wrote, among others.
